Activating Theft Recovery

Users can activate theft recovery against any equipment that is paired to a locator. If a piece of equipment is not paired to a locator, the theft recovery action is not available. When activating theft recovery, the system gathers key information like:

  • The name of the user who activated theft recovery

  • The email & phone number of the user who activated theft recovery

  • An optional image of the piece of equipment

  • An optional description of the piece of equipment

When activated, the current state of the equipment will be stored to the Theft Case. All future reports of position, motion, etc... from the equipment will be forwarded to the Theft Case for the duration of the active theft event.

Sharing Access to the Theft Case in the Theft Recovery UI

Once Theft Recovery is activated, an autogenerated temporary visitor account is created. This account has access to the case in the Theft Recovery UI for 7 days. The account’s access can be revoked at any time.

In the flow, a popup prompting the user to share visitor access is provided.

At this time, the user can share access to an autogenerated temporary access account the following ways:

  1. Magic Link: This link grants instant access by automatically logging in the user. It's designed for quick and hassle-free entry, so handle with care.

  2. Visitor Login URL & Access Code: Each account receives a distinct URL for personalized access. This link leads directly to the unique login page. Should it be retrieved later, it can be found in the visitor access list. This code acts as a password for account access. This code will be inaccessible after this dialog is closed as it is a password. Please ensure it's securely communicated to the intended recipient(s).

    1. If user loses the Access Code, they can reset it at any time from the "Temporary Access" page, but it will force the logout of anyone currently logged into the temporary account with Access Code and they will need to log back in with the new one.

  3. Email: Users can invite one or more visitors by email. A message with the magic link, login link, and access code will be sent.

  4. SMS: Users can invite one or more visitors by SMS. A message will be sent with the magic link.

Active Theft Case Management

While a Theft Case is active, the theft recovery mode card on the equipment item screen will show the information to the right. This is to ensure users:

  • know they should still contact police

  • have an easy way to navigate to the case by clicking on the case number

  • have an easy way to navigate to the temporary access page by clicking on share

Deactivating Theft Recovery

Users can deactivate theft recovery at any time. When a user chooses to deactivate theft recovery, we provide three options for them to select:

  1. Yes, the equipment was recovered.

  2. No, the equipment was not recovered.

  3. The equipment was not stolen.

An optional notes field is also provided for them to add more information. This is a way the system captures data on how successful the theft recovery feature is, while excluding tests/false alarms.

When theft recovery is ended, the relationship between the equipment and the Theft Case is broken. This means the case will no longer have real-time information like:

  • Position

  • Motion

  • Last Heartbeat

The Theft Case will have stored all historical information for this data from the time it was opened to the time it was closed. It will also store the equipment ID, equipment image, equipment description, and locator ID for easy access. Temporary users will retain access to this information until their temporary access expires.
