Introduction to Transfers of Ownership

At a fundamental level, "Transfers" is a term used to describe the feature set that allows users to transfer devices (equipment, locators) from their inventory to another user. This might be used by Sales Channel Partners to help set up customer inventory, equipment dealers selling individual pieces of equipment to a buyer, etc.

There are a few general concepts and terminology to understand when first learning about transfers.

Transfer Records

Whenever a user transfers devices, the system creates transfer records which helps track information about the transfer in real time (i.e. what’s the current status of the transfer?, who created the transfer? etc.) and serve as a historical record keeping tool of all transfers that have occurred.

Parent and Child Transfer Records

The system now supports individual and bulk transfers. To manage this, the system creates a Child Transfer Record for each device being included in the transfer and one overarching Parent Transfer Record that groups the child transfers together.

When viewing a table list, the user will always be looking a list of Parent Transfers. Once drilled into a particular transfer, the user can access a tab of Transferred Items which are the child transfers associated with the Parent Transfer.

Incoming vs. Outgoing Transfers

For each transfer that a user initiates, there are two Parent Transfer Records created (and corresponding Child Transfer Records underneath) - an Incoming Transfer and an Outgoing Transfer.

An Incoming Transfer Record gets associated with the location where the user who initiated the transfer (also known as the “Seller”) and the Outgoing Transfer Record gets associated with the users who is listed as named as the buyer on the transfer ( also known as the “Buyer”).

These are separate transfer records because the permissions each user needs to have to the transfer, and the ways they can interact with a transfer record, are different.

Transfers Pages in the User Interface

For End Users, there are several Transfers related pages in the User Interface:

Root Level Transfers Page

The root level transfer page is located in the top, horizontal navigation bar (called the “Root Navigation” or “Root Nav”). This page specifically contains transfers that have been transferred to you (i.e. you are listed as the “Buyer Username” on the transfer record). This is the page where users can view their incoming transfers in order to choose to accept or reject them.

Company and Location Level Transfers Pages

When drilled into a Company or Location, users can also see a Transfers page in the left-hand side, horizontal navigation bar (also called the Side Navigation). Transfers appear in the side navigation within a Company or Location for two reasons:

  • An Outgoing Transfer Record was initiated from the Location (which also assigned the Outgoing Transfer to the initiating location’s company)

  • An Incoming Transfer Record was accepted and associated with a location selected by the Buyer

Note: Rejected Incoming Transfer Records never get associated with a Location or Company since they are rejected before the buyer gets to the step to associate the Transfer with the Company
